Stomach pain can be more than just feeling discomfort. At times, it can cause great pain that interferes with a person’s ability to have a normal life and perform their daily routine. Stomach pain can be caused by many causes, with excessive stomach acid affecting the lining of the stomach being the most common cause. Gastric ulcer is a complication caused by such a cause. This is due to the compromised lining of the stomach leading to an inflammation process. There are a number of medicines that help to improve gastric such as Nexium 40 mg.

Gastric or also known as gastritis are inflammation of the stomach lining. Gastritis may occur suddenly and for a short time (acute gastritis) or may gradually and last for a few months or years (chronic gastritis). Acute gastritis may evolve into chronic one if it is not treated. The most common cause of gastritis is a bacteria known as Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori). Other causes include taking medication such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), stressful situations and drinking excessive alcohol. Less common causes are associated with autoimmune conditions known as autoimmune gastritis where the immune system reacts abnormally.

Gastritis is divided into 2 categories based on its severity. The first one is erosive gastritis. Erosive gastritis involves inflammation and erosion of stomach lining and often develops suddenly. The second one is nonerosive gastritis which involves changes in the stomach lining that range from wasting away (atrophy) of the stomach lining to transformation of stomach tissue into another type of intestinal tissue (metaplasia).

A person may or may not have symptoms. Symptoms may be mild to severe. In general, patients with gastric complaints of sharp, stabbing or burning pain to the upper-centre or upper part of the left abdomen. Pain may radiate to the back. Other common symptoms include bloating and nausea. At times, even vomiting. Indigestion may also occur. Although in most cases, symptoms are often mild and not needing immediate medical care. However, if symptoms do get worse, this should be a sign the patient should get medical advice. Signs such as vomiting blood, passing stool that is black in colour, abdominal pain with fever, dizziness, loss of consciousness, chest pain and shortness of breath should be taken seriously as these are signs to get urgent medical attention.

Doctors usually suspect gastritis when a person shows symptoms. Typically, no further test is needed but some doctors may run test to confirm the diagnosis such as endoscopy. Doctors may also run tests such as breath, blood or stool tests to identify the causes. If necessary, the doctor may do a biopsy which involves removing a small sample of tissues to be examined under a microscope.

The goal of treatment is to reduce the inflammation, improve symptoms and to treat the underlying cause. In general, doctors usually prescribe medication to reduce acid production and to neutralise the high acidity in the stomach. Examples of medications are antacids and proton pump inhibitors (PPI). If gastritis is caused by the infection of the H. pylori, antibiotics courses are given to curb the infection. If it is caused by a painkiller, the doctor will suggest the patient to either stop taking it or change it to another pain reliever that does not lead to worsening of the stomach ulcer. If you are wondering what is the fastest way to cure gastritis, surely it is with over-the-counter medications that block or reduce stomach acid. You can get this medication at most pharmacies and is usually affordable.

While it is true that knowing the fastest way to reduce gastric can be helpful, it is best for patients to understand that prevention is the best cure. Hence, taking preventative measures can help to reduce the likelihood and the severity of the upcoming gastric pain. It is worth noting that there are many issues that may cause gastritis but researchers are still learning about it. Thus, many causes remain unknown and make it impossible to prevent gastric However, there are things you can do reduce risk of gastric:

  • to practise healthy eating habit of eating plenty fresh fruits and vegetables
  • avoiding foods that could worsen the symptoms such as acidic, spicy and fatty food
  • avoid drinking alcohol and stop smoking
  • learn to manage stress and get quality sleep
  • consider taking probiotics such as eating yoghurt, kimchi and tempeh

In essence, gastric can occur with a variety of causes. While in general it is harmless, when it occurs frequently, gets severe or worse and especially not relieved by over-the-counter medication, patients should definitely get checked by a doctor. It is important to treat gastritis to prevent its complications. Complications such as stomach ulcers and bleeding are among the common ones. In rare cases, it may even heighten the risk for stomach cancer. Thus, it is best for patients to get the appropriate treatment. Patients need to make sure to have an active and healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk for gastric and to improve their health wellbeing in total.
